The first weekend in February
saw the Goulbourn Stingers Major Bantam AA basketball team
make the long trek to Niagara Falls to play in the Niagara
Falls Red Raiders Annual Basketball Classic.
In
the Friday evening draw versus the London Flames, the
Stingers started strong and built an early lead until the
Flames switched to an aggressive 1-3-1 zone and closed the
gap at the half. In the second half the Stingers struggled
from the field and the Flames took the lead. Some clutch
foul shooting in the final minutes allowed the Stingers to
hang on to win 33-30.

On
the Saturday afternoon, the Stingers took on the host
Niagara Falls Red Raiders in their second game of round
robin action. Again, the Stingers started strong and got an
early lead but faltered in the final quarter and let the
game slip away 37-29.
Saturday evening the Stingers met the Dundas Dynamo knowing
they needed to win this final round robin match to move
ahead into Sunday’s semi-finals. Once more the Stingers got
off to a great start to take a 6 point lead at the half. At
the final buzzer the Stingers were ahead 46-37 and had
earned a semi-final berth.
Sunday morning the Stingers took on the pre-tournament
favourites, the London Ramblers. The Ramblers had only one
loss this season and had swept their pool in preliminary
play. The Stingers refused to be intimidated and attacked
with everything they had. Each player raised the level of
her game as necessary to contribute to a tremendous team
effort. The lead seesawed back and forth with the Stingers
down by a couple at the end of the first quarter, down by 1
at half, up by 3 after the 3rd quarter, and posting a 32-30
win at the buzzer.
On
Sunday afternoon, the Stingers met the Waterloo Wildhawks
for the tournament championship. The intensity and energy
the Stingers had displayed earlier continued, with the team
playing tenacious defence and defeating the Wildhawks 35-23
to claim tournament gold. Stinger Molly Kennedy was awarded
the MVP for her play during the tournament.
The
Stingers are coached by Scott Nysedt, Peter Oatway and Paul
Streatch and are managed by Lorena-Del Nystedt.

defeated the Power 49-17. Next the Stingers took on the
Orillia Lakers. The Stingers played tenacious defence and
worked the ball well to beat the Lakers 41-19 and earn a
place in the tournament final.
Sunday morning began with an exhibition game against the
strong host squad. The Barrie Royals AA team downed the
Stingers 48-37 to set the tone for the tournament final. The
championship game tipped-off at 3:00 pm with the Stingers
again facing the Royals. Once more, the Stingers gave it
their best effort but came up short against a very strong
Barrie squad. Barrie took the championship game 45-31
leaving the Stingers to accept silver medals for their
efforts over the weekend.

The Stingers ran the table during the round robin portion of the tournament, chalking up wins against Barrhaven A, Gloucester A, and the West Island Lakers to finish first in their pool. The West Island Lakers earned a bye to also advance out of the pool and faced the Stingers for a second time in semi-final play. Again the Stingers prevailed 47-30. The Stingers then took on the Barrhaven AA squad for the tournament championship. Furious end-to-end action was the hallmark of the contest. The Stingers worked the ball well and played great defence to win the game 41-26 and earn gold medals. Stinger Molly Kennedy was selected the MVP for the tournament for her outstanding play throughout the weekend. The Stingers are coached by Scott Nystedt, Peter Oatway and Paul
Streatch.
Stingers Get Silver
The
Goulbourn Stingers Major Bantam AA Basketball team earned
silver medals in the Barrhaven Blue Devils VENOSAN Canada
Fall Basketball Tournament held November 18-20, 2005 in
Barrhaven.
The
Stingers opened the tournament with a Friday evening draw
versus the Gloucester Wolverines AA. In the one previous
meeting between the two teams this season, Gloucester had
beaten the Stingers soundly 33-17. A refocused Stinger squad
played tenacious defence and again held the Wolverines to 33
points while improving their offense substantially to take
the contest by a single point, 34-33.
Saturday afternoon, in their second game of round robin
action, the Stingers took on the rival Cornwall Lions. It
was a tight, scrappy game from start to finish with the
Lions posting a one point victory, 28-27. Since Gloucester
defeated Cornwall earlier in the day, this resulted in a
three-way tie for first place in the pool. The Stingers were
subsequently awarded first in the pool on the basis of
fewest points scored against and earned themselves a bye
into semi-final action on Sunday.
Sunday morning brought a semi-final re-match with the
Gloucester Wolverines. The Stingers controlled the play and
rolled their lines to keep the pressure on the Wolverines.
They posted a 31-24 win and earned a place in the
championship game.
The
gold medal game saw the Stingers take on the Ottawa Shooting
Stars. The Stingers struggled early against the Stars’ zone
defence and trailed 9-0 after the first quarter. After
regrouping, the Stingers began chipping away and eventually
took the lead 28-27 with little time left on the clock. The
Stars replied with 4 points to take the game 31-28 leaving
the Stingers with silver medals for their efforts. The
Stingers are coached by Scott Nystedt, Peter Oatway and Paul
Streatch.
