Goulbourn Major Atom Girls Great Season Finish

The Goulbourn Major Atom Girls basketball team completed a very successful season, finishing tenth in the province out of 63 teams. The team travelled to Mississauga at the end of March for the Provincial Tournament. The team was very strong in their pool, winning all their games: 34-28 against Peterborough Power; 38-24 against Caledon Cougars; 50-36 against Newman Youth. On the third day of the tournament, Goulbourn took on the Tecumseh Saints in the semi-finals and won 36-27. The Hornets played the Kitchener –Waterloo Lightning in the final game. It was a very close game but the Hornets came home with silver after losing 27-29.

The last tournament of the basketball season for the Major Atom Hornets was the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association (EOBA) Tournament in Kingston on April 10. In the round robin games, Goulbourn faced Barrhaven and Hull. The Hornets beat Barrhaven 28-17, player of the game was Isabelle Gemmill. The team also defeated Hull 48-21 and the player of the game went to Nicole Murphy. In the final game, the Hornets faced Barrhaven again and came home with gold medals, winning 31-24, player of the game was Emma Hunt. The EOBA tournament MVPs were Emma Streatch and Anyssa Close.

The Goulbourn Hornets are coached by Dawn Murphy, Al Thomson and Mike Mount. The team manager is Sharon Streatch.

Hornets Major Atom Girls Win Medals

The Goulbourn Hornets Major Atom Girls basketball team played in the Mike O’Connor Tournament in Gloucester in February. It was a very successful tournament with 3 wins in the round robin against Ottawa South, Kingston Impact White and Kingston Impact Blue. Players of the game were Sasha Thomson and Emma Streatch. The Hornets met Kingston Blue again in the semi-finals and won 36 -25. In the finals, the Hornets were beat by St. Victoire from Montreal and came home with silver.

A few weeks later, the Hornets travelled to Kingston for the Kingston Impact Tournament March 5-7. On Friday, the team played the Kingston Cats and won 44-17 (player of the game was Julia Blais). In Saturday’s first game the Hornets defeated Belleville 52-15 (player of the game was Taylor Drew) and in the second game they beat Kingston Impact Blue 39-21 (player of the game was Emily Mount). In the semi-finals on Sunday, the Hornets defeated Capitol Xelles 49-9 (player of the game was Andrea Banks) which took them on to the finals against Kingston Impact Blue. Goulbourn was victorious, winning 35-18 and coming home with gold medals (player of the game was Emma Hunt).

The Hornets Major Atom Girls finished 9th in the province out of 63 teams. They will be travelling to Etobicoke, ON to play in the Provincial Championship on the weekend of March 26-28.

Major Atom Girls Win Silver in the Chris Paulin Tournament in Kanata

The Goulbourn Hornets Girls Major Atom team played in the Chris Paulin Tournament in Kanata at the beginning of December.  It was their first tournament of the 2009-2010 season and was a very successful event for the team.  The team won all of their games on Friday and Saturday, beating Barrhaven, Kingston White and Kingston Blue.  On Sunday, they played Ottawa South in the semi-finals and won 43- 31.   The final game was very exciting with the Hornets coming home with silver medals after getting beaten in a close game by Barrhaven 31-32.
