Third Place for Bantam Hornets
in Eastern Ontario
Division 2 Championships
The Goulbourn Hornets Bantam
Basketball team took third place at the Eastern
Ontario Basketball Association Division 2
Championships held April 17th and 18th, 2009 at
Sacred Heart High School. The Hornets entered the
tournament ranked sixth of eight teams and upset two
of the three higher seeds they faced to finish third
in the tournament.
The first game of the tournament
was a must win situation as a loss would send the
Hornets to the B side of the tournament and erase
all chance of a tournament championship. The Hornets
faced the number two seed, the Cornwall Lions in
this initial match. The Hornets came out of the gate
hard and played tenacious defense to lead the
contest 16-11 at half. The Hornets continued their
tough defensive pressure in the second half and the
Lions found themselves unable to mount a sustained
attack as the Hornets won the game 44-39.

On Saturday morning the Hornets
played the tournament number two seed, the Nepean
Bobcats. The Hornets played a super first half to
trail by only two points at the break. Unfortunately,
the Hornets faltered in the second half and went on to
lose the contest 48-38. This loss set up a final game
versus the fifth seed Ottawa Shooting Stars. The
Hornets initially got off to a slow start and trailed
10-0 in the first quarter but rallied to lead 28-20 at
the half and went on to win the game 52-45 and place
third in the tournament.
The Hornets are coached by John
Johnson, Kim Currie and Colin Anderson and are
managed by Sonia Viau.

On Sunday morning, the Hornets
faced Blessed Sacrament #4 in semi-final action. The
Hornets lead from start to finish and posted a 54-34
victory to advance to the tournament championship.
Late Sunday afternoon, the Hornets
met Brantford CYO#3 to decide the tournament
championship. The Hornets got off to a very slow
start and trailed 18-6 partway through the second
quarter. A time-out by Coach John Johnson settled
the team and they began to chip away at the lead. At
the break they were down only four points, 22-18. In
the second half, the Hornets continued to play
excellent defence and managed to put a few points on
the board to tie the game before the third quarter
was out. The game remained tight throughout the
forth quarter. The Hornets tied the game with eight
seconds left on the clock. Brantford subsequently
turned the ball over and then fouled with two
seconds to play. A last minute foul shot gave the
Hornets the lead for the final time. At the buzzer,
the Hornets took the Division 7A tournament
championship by a single point, 48-47.
