Major Bantam Girls win Silver
in EOBA Division 1 Championships
The Eastern Ontario Major Bantam Girls Division 1
Championships were held in Orleans the weekend of April 23
– 25. The Hornet girls sailed through pool play, beating
Hull 61-37, Cornwall 47 – 40 and Barrhaven 65 – 39.
Finishing first in their pool, the Hornets faced Ottawa
South Bedrock in semi-final play. The girls played an
impressive offensive game, doubling Bedrock with a score
of 48 – 24 to advance to the Championship final. For the
third time this season, the Hornets and Russell Rockets
found themselves opponents in a medal game. The Hornets
were hoping to sweep the Rockets for their third straight
medal win. An exciting and very close game, with quarter
end scores of 13-13, 18 (G) – 25 (R) and 33 (G) – 36 (R),
fans knew they were in for another exciting finish. With
two minutes left in the game the Hornets found themselves
down by 4 points. A late game 3-point shot put the Hornets
up by 1. Russell gained possession with 7 seconds
remaining and managed to sink the winning basket at the
buzzer. Silver medals for the Hornets.
The girls
had a tremendous season, ranked 20th in Ontario, finishing
first in season play in Eastern Ontario and medaling in 5
out of 7 tournaments. These twelve young ladies impressed
many fans over the season. Of the 12 team members, 8 are
eligible to return to the team next season.
The
parents would like to thank the girls for a very
entertaining season. the coaches, Scott Nystedt and Dave
Byck, and manager Lorena-Del Nystedt for all their hard
work and dedication to the team.

Girls win Silver
in Kingston
The Major Bantam Girls participated in an
exciting weekend of basketball in Kingtson on March 5 – 7.
Guaranteed five games in the tournament, the first challenge
was the Kanata Cavaliers. After a close first half, the
Hornets pulled ahead in the second for a 44 – 33 victory.
Katie Kennedy was awarded player of the game. Early Saturday
morning the Hornets faced a very physical Toronto Lords
team. The Hornets played hard and managed a 50 – 44 victory.
Player of the game award went to Madison Graves. In their
final round robin game, the Hornets broke through Cornwall’s
zone defence and dominated the game with a 45 – 27 victory.
Judy Kelenga received the player of the game award.
Going undefeated in round robin play and
finishing first in their pool, the Hornets faced the
Belleville Spirits in another early morning game on Sunday.
The girls played an excellent game on both offence and
defence, beating the Spirits 57 – 26 to advance to the gold
medal final.
What proved to be the most exciting game
of the season to date, the Hornets faced the Toronto Lords
again on Sunday afternoon, Late in the fourth the Hornets
looked to be facing defeat. After an awesome press, steals
and a run of points, the team pulled to within two points.
The Hornets called a time out with 1.7 seconds left.
Although they managed to inbound and get the shot off, the
ball bounced off the rim and Toronto was up by two at the
buzzer. Well earned silver medals for the Hornet girls.

for Major Bantam Girls
The Major Bantam Girls faced some tough
competition at the Mike O’Connor Tournament in Gloucester on
February 19 – 21. In round robin play on Friday evening, the
Hornets played West Island Lakers from Montreal. The Hornets
stuggled with turnovers and ended their opening game with a
45-40 loss. The team rebounded on Saturday morning, facing
host team Gloucester Wolverines. Playing a great defensive
game, the girls held a comfortable lead throughout, winning
the game 48 – 11.
In the pool cross-over game on Saturday
afternoon the Hornets were defeated by Transway (Hamilton),
the #1 ranked team in Ontario. Finishing second in their
pool, the Hornets found themselves facing Transway again in
the semi-final on Sunday morning. Although defeated, the
Hornets held Transway to their lowest scoring game in the
torunament.
The Hornets met a regional rival, Russell
Rockets in the Bronze medal game. A very close and exciting
game throughout, however the Hornets managed to pull ahead
in the final quarter to beat the Rockets 51-46.

for Major Bantam Girls
The Major Bantam Girls won their second medal of the
season as they hosted their own tournament over the weekend
of January 15th 17th.
The Hornets played back to back games on Friday evening,
beating Barrhaven 33 22, and Kemptville 38 13. Player of the
Game awards went to Judy Kelenga (vs Barrhaven) and Adrianna
Nystedt (vs Kemptville). Facing two of their toughest
competition this season, the Hornets faced Kanata and
Russell on Saturday. Missing a couple of players to
injuries, the Hornets pulled together to demonstrate a great
team effort, winning both matches by scores of 42 35 vs
Kanata and 55 36 vs Russell. Player of the game awards went
to Aelah Thomson (vs Kanata) and Devon Kedrosky (vs
Russell). Going undefeated in the round robin, the Hornets
advanced directly to the Gold Medal game on Sunday
afternoon.
Facing Kanata again in the final, the Hornets had a slow
start and fell behind in the first quarter. Despite
struggling with their foul shooting, the girls fought back
to end the first half up by two points. Neither team was
able to pull ahead by more than a few points in the second
half, regulation time ended with the game tied. An exciting
overtime followed but the final buzzer sounded when Kanata
was up by two, giving the Hornets the silver medal.
The team is coached by Scott Nystedt and Dave Byck, and
managed by Lorena-Del Nystedt.

Goulbourn Major Bantam Girls Win Gold at Kanata Tournament
The Goulbourn Hornets Major Bantam Girls
participated in the Chris Paulin (Kanata) Tournament on
December 4-6. The team headed into the tournament with an
amazing season start of 15 wins and only 1 loss.
A late
Friday evening game had the Hornets playing the Ottawa
Shooting Stars. With a significant lead at half time, the
girls continued to dominate and finished with a 48-16
victory. Taylor McCormick was awarded Player of the Game.
Saturday morning the Hornets played amazing defense, holding
the Cornwall Lions to only 7 points in the first half. The
Hornets continued their solid play to win the game 43-19.
Player of the Game award went to Chloe Brownlee. The
Gloucester Wolverines were the final opponents in pool play.
Trailing 20-17 at half time, the Hornets pulled together and
held Gloucester to only 13 points in the second half,
claiming a 45-33 victory to finish first in their pool.
Player of the Game award went to Madison Graves.

Sunday’s
semi-final matched the Hornets against host team Kanata
Cavaliers. A hard fought game from start to finish, the
Hornets came out victorious with a 36-34 win, securing a
spot in the Gold Medal game.
The Hornets faced the
Russell Rockets in the championship game on Sunday
afternoon. The halftime score had the Hornets up 23-17. With
a refreshed strategy in place the girls dominated the second
half to win the Gold Medal with a 48-40 victory. Madison
Graves was selected Tournament Most Valuable Player.
The
Hornets are coached by Scott Nystedt and Dave Byck and are
managed by Lorena-Del Nystedt.
