Goulbourn Girls Major Bantam AAA wins gold in the 2012 Mike O'Connor Memorial Basketball Tournament
On the weekend of Feb 10-12, the Goulbourn Girls Major Bantam #1 team competed in the AA-AAA division in the 2012 Mike O'Connor Memorial Basketball Tournament in Gloucester.
On Friday night Goulbourn defeated the West Island Lakers club from Montreal by a score of 47 – 32 to open pool play. On Saturday morning Goulbourn defeated the host Gloucester Wolverines #1 team 35 – 28 in a competitive game, securing first place in their pool and a birth in the semi finals.
In their semi-final game on Sunday morning, Goulbourn faced Ottawa South. The game was highly contested, with the lead changing hands several times. Goulbourn led by 1 after the first quarter and by 2 at the half, but were outscored 10 – 6 in the 3rd quarter to find themselves down by 2 heading into the 4th. In the final frame. Goulbourn stepped up their defense, and outscored Ottawa South 9 – 3 to secure the win 38 – 34, and earn a spot in the gold medal game.
In the championship game Goulbourn played Nepean Blue Devils #1 in an exciting final. Goulbourn got off to a terrific start, leading by 10 at one point in the first half. But in the 3rd quarter, Nepean stormed back to tie the game and steal the momentum. In the fourth quarter, the game remained close, but Goulbourn took a 4 point lead with 2 minutes to go, and held on for a 43 – 39 victory to win the gold.
Congrats to the Hornets team, whose depth, skill and team play demonstrated in this fair-play tournament made the coaches and fans proud.

2011 Chris Paulin Basketball Tournament
In the first two games of the tournament, Goulbourn produced convincing wins over the Russell Rockets (57-10) and the Ottawa Shooting Stars #1 (62-15). The last game of pool play had Goulbourn playing Ottawa South with first place in pool A on the line. Tied at half, and down only 3 heading in the final quarter, it was a very competitive game, but the Hornets fell just short in their come back (losing 39-37).
In the semi final on Sunday, Goulbourn faced Capital Xelles #1 as the top and undefeated team from pool B. This game was again highly contested, with Goulbourn managing to build on the 1 point lead they held heading into the final quarter, and hold on for victory (38-35).
In the gold medal game Goulbourn played Nepean Blue Devils #1 in an exciting final. The game was tied after two quarters, and the lead changed hands many times in the second half. The Hornets found themselves down in the final minutes of the game, but with intensity on defence and a few huge baskets, they managed to tie the game up with less than a minute remaining. With 8 seconds to go, Nepean retook the lead on a free throw, but Goulbourn was able to push the ball up the floor and score with 3 seconds left in the game, completing the comeback and winning gold by a single point (35-34).
Congrats to the Hornets, whose effort and attitude throughout the tournament made the coaching staff and their fans proud.
