Goulbourn Minor
Midget team medaled
in it's 4th
consecutive
tournament this year
with a Bronze medal
at the Guelph
Invitational. The
team started off a
little slow with a
early morning
Saturday game. Even
with an offensive
outburst by Josh
Russell, the team
came up short
against York South
Silver 49-40. The
team then went on to
out rebound Blessed
Sacrament with a
convincing with
52-20 with Magnus
Nowell and Brandon
Hodge dominating the
game defensively. In
the third game,
Goulburn beat the
host team from
Guelph 76 - 16.
Dominating the
boards offensively
were Cameron Whyte
and Jason Bekkedam
who helped the team
control the game
from start to
finish. On Sunday
morning, Goulburn
came up in the
semi-finals against
undeated Oakville -
it was a close game
throughout with the
lead changing hands
several times. Led
by Keegan Hreljac
and Kevin Ferguson
the team came up
short losing 50 -
45. Disappointed
with it's lost - the
Goulburn team came
out strong and never
look back defeating
and revenging it's
earlier lost to York
Silver 79 - 69.
Playing their best
games of the year
both Jacob Fulton
and Dalton King had
strong defensive and
offensive games.
Mitch Harrison dish
out 14 assists and
had 8 points to lead
the team.

Gold Medal for Minor Midget Boys Team
Minor Midget team headed down to Southern
Ontario to play in the Grimsby Tournament. With all of their
games scheduled for Saturday, the Goulbourn team knew they
were in for a tough day. Even with strong play by Brandon
Hodge, Jason Bekkedam and Magnus Nowell, the team came up a
little short losing to Brampton 1: 55-49. In the second game
with outstanding foul shooting from Kevin Ferguson 9/13,
excellent passing by Shaun Hudson and great defensive by Josh
Russell, Goulbourn went on to defeat host Grimsby 62-37.
In the semi-finals, Goulbourn was pitted
against top rank Hamilton. Racing off to a quick 26-2 start,
the team faced some adversity with Hamilton scoring in the
dying seconds to tie the game. Rather than put their heads
down - the team lead by captain's Keegan Hijack and Mitch
Harrison stormed out and outscored Hamilton winning 55-49. In
the finals, Goulbourn faced Brampton 1 - lead by outstanding
play off the bench from Cameron Whyte and Dalton King, both
whom had their best games of the tournament. Goulbourn avenged
their morning lost beating Brampton 55-49 for championship.

Silver Medal for Minor Midget Boys!
The first third of the
session has had it's ups and downs for the Minor Midget
Boys Team. Playing locally against Major Midget teams
has been a challenge for the team so far. But with 9
returning players from last year Major Bantam team plus
2 new players, they have competed well at the Minor
level.
Our first tournament was the
CEGEP Sherbrooke Annual Fall Tournament which consisted
of 16 teams from across Quebec. Goulbourn was the only
team from outside Quebec and was very well received by
the tournament organizers and Quebec teams. The
Goulbourn team went undefeated in the opening round
robin with excellent play from Keegan Hreljac, Mitch
Harrison and Kevin Ferguson. Losing 2 players to
injuries - in the first round left them a little
undermanned, but the boys still managed a third place
finish.

Late November saw the team
head to Toronto to play in the Motion Fall Tournament
which featured AAA and AA teams. It was an outstanding
tournament for Goulbourn as they went 2-1 in the round
robin play and went on to play the host Motion team,
which is considered one of the top Minor Midget boys’
teams in Ontario. The team fell to Motion by 12 points
ending up with a silver medal. Throughout the tournament
and especially in the gold medal game - Brandon Hodge,
Josh Russell, Magnus Nowell and Shaun Hudson played
outstanding basketball.
The team, coached by Tom
Hodge, Mark Hreljac and Mark Nowell, would also like to
thank the club for supporting a Minor Midget team which
is a first for Goulbourn. We all look forward to the
remaining part of the 2009 season.
