Major Midget Girls Team

2011 / 2012

Major Midget Hornets are Golden Girls at Provincial Championships

After coming just short in the Eastern Ontario Basketball Championships by winning a silver medal after losing by 4 points to the Gloucester Wolverines the Goulbourn Major Midget Hornets were focused on winning a gold medal at the Provincial Championships.

During the month of April the girls worked hard adding extra workouts including interval training on the track. On Friday April 27, 2012 the girls travelled to Waterloo Ontario to compete in the Major Midget Girls Provincial Championships in Division 4.

On the Friday night the Hornets were playing the Toronto Triple Threat. They had never faced this team before. The Hornets worked hard putting on a full court zone press to try and wear down the Triple Threat. Toronto had some very fast players and was able to break the press early on getting a 4 point lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter coach Scott Nystedt switched defenses and the tactic worked. The Hornets were able to take a 4 point lead into the half. The recent track work proved successful in the second half of the game as the Hornets were able to outrun the tiring Triple Threat. In the end Goulbourn won 56 to 45. Chloe Brownlee was high scorer with 15 points and Katie Kennedy had 13.

Next up for the Hornets was the Niagara Thunder who they faced Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Thunder was coached by an extremely intense coach and their aggressive play early on let the Hornets know they were in for a battle. The Hornets came to play, and matched the aggressiveness demonstrated by the thunder. At the half the Hornets had a 1 point lead, 21 to 20. The second half was much the same with both teams working very hard on offense and defense. In the third quarter the Hornets outscored the Thunder 12 to 6 giving them a 7 point lead heading in to the 4th and final quarter. The last quarter was a real battle with the Thunder outscoring the Hornets by 3 points. The Hornets felt good about escaping the tough match with a 4 point victory. High scorer was Chloe Brownlee with 13 points while Julia Blais had 9.

Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. the Hornets were facing the Sudbury Jam, knowing that if they won this match they would finish first in their pool and play for a medal on Sunday. The Hornets pounced on the Sudbury team with a full court press and didn’t let up. After the first quarter they were ahead 15 to 2. The second quarter was closer with the Hornets winning 8 to 5, giving them a 23 to 7 lead at the half. In the second half the Hornets never lost control of the game and ended up beating Sudbury 52 to 30 to finish first in the pool and advance to the final 4 teams on Sunday. High scorer was Michela Barresi who had 11 points and Katie Kennedy added 7.

In the semifinals Sunday morning the Hornets were matched against the Capital Xelles, who they knew were a very strong team after beating them by a narrow margin in the Eastern Ontario Championships, where the Xelles finished with a bronze medal. The Hornets came out strong and controlled the entire game. From the very start they led and never relinquished the lead. In the end they soundly defeated the Xelles 40 to 26 and earned the right to play for the gold medal. None of these girls had ever won a gold medal at the Provincial Championships before and they were very excited. Katie Kennedy scored 17 points for the Hornets.

The final gold medal game was set for Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against the Niagara Thunder who had advanced also. The Thunder’s only loss of the weekend had been on the Saturday morning to the Hornets. The Hornets were pumped up heading into this match and quickly used what they had learned Friday night against the Thunder and put it into action. The Hornets jumped out to the lead by putting on a full court press that they kept up the entire game. The Thunder became very frustrated as the Hornets lead kept increasing, which led to many team fouls. The game concluded with the Hornets beating the Thunder 48 to 28 to win the Gold Medal. Katie Kennedy had 14 points and Chloe Brownlee 12 points for the victory.

The season is now over, but next season looks very promising also, as 10 of the girls can return to the team next season.

Goulbourn Hornets Major Midget Girls Win Silver Medal at
Ottawa Winterfest Basketball Tournament

Friday January 13, 2012 was a fitting day for the tip off of the Ottawa Winterfest Major Midget Girls Basketball Tournament. Snow and freezing rain had pelted eastern Ontario all day with several teams travelling from other areas of the province. Your Goulbourn Hornets were set to play the Dundas Dynamo to open up the tournament. Travelling from the Hamilton area it took Dundas nine hours to reach Ottawa. The Hornets showed no mercy right from the tip off. The Hornets used a strong full court press creating many turnovers for the Dundas Dynamo. By half time the Hornets had the Dynamo tired and down 9 points. In the second half the Hornets continued their pressure wearing out the Dynamo which resulted in a 30 point victory for the Hornets 49 – 19. Michela Barresi and Katie Kennedy were the high scorers with 10 points each.

The next morning on Saturday January 14th the Hornets met the unbeaten Gloucester Wolverines. The Wolverines came out hard against the Hornets and by half time were up 10 points on them. A motivational speech at half time fired up the girls and they came out blazing in the second half. The Hornets caught up to the Wolverines and briefly took the lead before falling behind 1 point with 9 seconds left in the game. A time out was called and Coach Nystedt drew up a final play designed to give them a chance to win the game. The play put Katie Kennedy in an isolation play where she attacked the basket, when up and over her defender laying the ball over the rim where it rolled around the rim and then fell through as time ran out. The Hornets beat the Wolverines 46 – 45 handing them their first loss of the season. Michela Barresi was high scorer with 13 points and Katie Kennedy had 12.

Saturday afternoon had the Hornets facing the Nepean Bluedevils. The Blue Devils challenged the Hornets early creating several turnovers. At Half time the Hornets were down 5 points to the Blue Devils. The Hornets re-grouped at halftime and came out in the second half with an aggressive full court press. During a double team situation with Adrianna Nystedt and Katie Kennedy, Nystedt went down hard on the floor and ended up going to the hospital and her left arm was put in a cast. Goulbourn went on to win the game with Katie Kennedy being high scorer and finishing with 21 points.

Saturday night was the quarter finals and the Hornets faced the Toronto Mumba. A well balanced attack had the Hornets leading the entire game. The half time score had the Hornets ahead 29 – 16. Continued strong play in the second half had the Hornets winning 53 – 34 qualifying them for the semi-finals on Sunday.

Sunday morning the Hornets faced the Belleville Spirit in the semi-final game. The Spirit came out strong and had the Hornets quickly down 6 – 0. A time-out and a defensive change to a 1-3-1 zone left the Spirit struggling to penetrate the zone. At halftime the Hornets led the Spirit 31 – 20. In the second half the Spirit switched their defense to a zone also. This move had some success, but in the end the Hornets won the match 51 – 44 earning them a re-match with the Gloucester Wolverines in the Gold Medal Game. Michela Barresi had 15 points and Anyssa Close had 11.

In the gold medal game the Wolverines were looking for revenge against the Hornets who earlier in the tournament beat them for their first lost this season. It was a close first half with the Hornets leading for awhile. A late first half run by the Wolverines left them in the lead at the half 25 – 19. The second half was much the same. The Hornets would get the Wolverines lead down to 4 points, but then the Wolverines would come back. In the end the Wolverines proved to be too much for the Hornets and they went on to beat the Hornets 52 – 44 leaving the Hornets with the silver medal. Chloe Brownlee and Michela Barresi were high scorers with 7 points. Michela Barresi was named Tournament MVP for the Hornets.

The Goulbourn Hornets are a young team with only two girls on the team at the Major Midget Level and the other 10 younger. Despite their youth they ended the tournament with 11 wins and 2 losses on the season in Provincial Major Midget play.
